Case Study Cafe 4: PETRONAS and Country Fire Authority Australia

In this case study cafe we will look at two case studies:
  • Critical Knowledge Identification at Gas and New Energy Business, PETRONAS, Using the MASK Method, presented by Syed Kamil B. Syed Md Nasser and Nurool Suhana Bt. Shahrin.
  • Expertise Management at Country Fire Authority, presented by Stuart French.

All participants should have reviewed the case study details in advance of this Case Study Cafe. The materials are posted below. Each 1 hour session of the Cafe will begin with a very short recap of the case study by the case presenter, there will be a short breakout session for you to compare your areas of interest with other participants, and then the floor will be opened to questions and discussion.

About Syed Kamil B. Syed Md Nasser

Syed Kamil is currently the Change Strategy Executive of Gas & New Energy, PETRONAS. Prior to joining Change Management, he was the Business Venture Analyst of PETRONAS Gas Berhad. He has also served in various roles which include Commercial Excellence, Operational Performance Improvement, Organisational Transformation and Knowledge Management. He was previously appointed as the member of Business Technology Steering Committee, PETRONAS Gas Berhad in 2016. He joined PETRONAS in 2012 after graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Human Sciences, specialised in Political Science and Economics from International Islamic University Malaysia.

About Nurool Suhana Bt. Shahrin

Nurool Suhana Bt Shahrin graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Business Information Systems from Universiti Teknologi Petronas in 2012. and has been with PETRONAS since then.

Her first portfolio was taking care of Project Knowledge Management in Risk Management. The focus was to capture and utilize knowledge to be implemented and reused for the company’s benefit from the risk management angle. Post-2016, she joined PETRONAS' KM COE (Centre of Excellence) to work on Governance & Performance. The key deliverable is the business conceptualization & KM Strategy formulation to benefit PETRONAS groupwide by utilizing knowledge management for business deliverables. Another area of focus that she has to manage is records management that is guided by legal requirements and needs. 
Suhana has worked with the Gas and New Energy (GNE) sector to help them with their core strategic knowledge findings. This is to identify key knowledge assets that are critical and at risk to the business, prioritize the focus and assist GNE in developing the appropriate KM workplans.

About Stuart French

Stuart French is a Knowledge Management Consultant, an active contributor in global knowledge management networks, and also the Head of KM at the Country Fire Authority Victoria, Australia.

He helps companies with expertise identification and management, collaboration, teamwork and knowledge cultures and the development of platforms to improve their performance and resilience through change.

He has completed a Masters thesis on the use of Collaboration systems in Small to Medium Enterprises through the University of South Australia and is a board member of AuSKM and Australian delegate to the KM Global Network. Stuart blogs at www.deltaknowledge.net and is a gifted artist and watercolorist.

About Patrick Lambe (Facilitator)

A globally recognised knowledge management practitioner, Patrick was originally trained in Information and Library Science. He arrived in KM via a second career in training and development, and has been based in Singapore for three decades. Patrick is the author of Organising Knowledge: Taxonomies, Knowledge and Organisation Effectiveness (Oxford: Chandos 2007), and co-author with Nick Milton of The Knowledge Manager's Handbook 2nd ed. (London: Kogan Page 2019), which won CILIP UK's Knowledge and Information Management Award 2019 - Information Resources Print Category. Patrick is currently working on a major book on Knowledge Auditing and Knowledge Mapping.

​Patrick is Visiting Professor in the KIM PhD programme at Bangkok University, former President of the 
International Society for Knowledge Organization Singapore Chapter and a member of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Knowledge Management, Knowledge Management For Development Journal, and Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation. His 2011 paper on the history of knowledge management "The Unacknowledged Parentage of Knowledge Management" won a Highly Commended Award in the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2012.
