Case Study Cafe 3: Moscow Airport and Asian Development Bank

In this case study cafe we will look at two case studies:
  • Expertise Management at Moscow Airport, presented by Olga Bogomolova.
  • Developing a Knowledge Management Action Plan at the Asian Development Bank, presented by Dr. Susann Roth and Mary Jane Carangal-San Jose.

All participants should have reviewed the case study details in advance of this Case Study Cafe. The materials are posted below. Each 1 hour session of the Cafe will begin with a very short recap of the case study by the case presenter, there will be a short breakout session for you to compare your areas of interest with other participants, and then the floor will be opened to questions and discussion.

About Olga Bogomolova

Olga Bogomolova has been working as a knowledge manager since 2011, and was among the first professional knowledge management specialists in Russia. She was previously Head of Knowledge Management at Moscow Domodedovo Airport, and then led KM at NLMK Group (a leading international manufacturer of high-quality steel). At the moment she heads up KM in the biggest diversified holding company in Russia. Olga’s particular specialisation is the digitalization of KM-processes, KM-products and services. She also promotes the idea of marketing in KM, marketing intellectual products and digitizing the process of their consumption.

Among her projects Olga has implemented numerous knowledge bases, a social intranet, in-house consulting services, a crowdsourcing system for gathering and managing ideas, communities of practice, expertise mapping and competency verification systems, semantic analysis of media, an encyclopedia of aviation (AviaWiki), and a thesaurus of aviation terms among others.


​Olga was a speaker at KM World 2019, a winner of the Intranet & Digital Workplace Awards 2019, and Digital Workplace Of The Year 2019. She is a judge in the KM Russia Awards, the Russian Intranet Awards and is a member of council for the Russian KM Alliance.

About Dr. Susann Roth

Susann leads ADB’s knowledge management and innovation program and heads ADB’s Knowledge Advisory Services Center. The center manages the implementation of ADB’s Knowledge Management Action Plan 2021-2025. The plan moves the bank from transactional to transformational knowledge management. Susann’s team supports cross-sector knowledge programs and works on innovation ecosystem development in countries.

Susann’s team developed ADB’s first futures and foresight program, and she designed ADB’s first technology innovation challenge. Before this role, Susann managed several ADB trust funds, which piloted innovative social sector interventions for regional health security and pandemic preparedness. Susann launched the first ADB health bond, developed the first digital health flagship program, championed health impact assessment across sectors and supported ADB’s first private sector investments in health sector companies and equity funds. She launched ADB’s Operational Plan for Health 2015-2020 which brought back the health sector in ADB. Susann also led the ADB-UNDP-ESCAP partnership during the preparation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Susann joined ADB in 2009 as Social Development Specialist in Central and West Asia, where she worked on social and gender development issues across all sectors.
 
Susann is a German national. She holds a Medical Doctor degree and a PhD in medical science from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, as well as a Master of Public Health and Policy from the University of the Philippines.  She has been trained in transplant and general surgery, and emergency medicine in Germany and the US (Baylor College, Duke University, University of Washington and University of Heidelberg) and is board certified in emergency medicine. She also attended a fellowship program in dermatology and tropical medicine in the Philippines and joined post-graduate courses in adult medical education and didactics at the University of Dundee, UK, which she applied to support the reform of Germany’s medical curriculum at the University of Heidelberg. She worked in the public and private sectors before joining ADB, where she led transformation projects, and she served as Adjunct Professor at LKY School of Public Policy in Singapore from 2016-2018. The World Health Organization invited Susann to their external technical advisory group for innovation and digital health in 2019 for a term of two years. She is trained in futures thinking and strategic foresight techniques in change and knowledge management, in adult learning and in corporate management. About Mary Jane Carangal-San Jose

Mary Jane is Senior Knowledge Sharing and Services Officer in ADB's Knowledge Advisory Services Center, where she has been working since 2013. Her work has included creating a database of knowledge partnerships and related policies, enhancing the formulation of country knowledge plans and the preparation of ADB’s Knowledge Management Action Plan for 2021 to 2025. Jane has been leading the work of the Center on updating tools for measuring the results of ADB’s knowledge including through perception surveys and benchmarking studies. At the ADB Library, Jane led a team of subject specialists who pioneered in packaging and disseminating knowledge on ADB’s core sector and thematic operations. These brief summaries and thought pieces, and bi-annual digest have been a staple reference of the ADB’s communities of practice. Jane joined ADB in 2004 as an economics officer where she co-authored working papers and was involved in evaluating the impact of projects and conducting economic analysis of them, including policy-based loans. Before joining ADB, Jane worked for a variety of private companies and multinational corporations in the Philippines where she practiced aspects of knowledge management through record keeping and organizing databases to facilitate making well-informed business decisions and to guide development projects.

Jane, a Filipino national, holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of the Philippines. She completed a master’s degree in Advanced Marketing from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia under a full scholarship program.

About Kim Martins (Facilitator)

Kim is based in New Zealand and is one of Asia Pacific's most experienced knowledge management and learning professionals. She has held a number of senior positions in the KM field in Australia from Chief Knowledge Officer for Ernst and Young, Australia to Director, Knowledge Networks, Australian Securities and Investments Commission. Most recently, she was a Senior Consultant working on KM strategy for IFAD (Water sector) in Rome, Italy.

Kim was the Chair for Standards Australia KM Committee from 2005-2010 - the Committee responsible for the Australian KM Standard. Kim speaks regularly at conferences and conducts workshops and masterclasses in the areas of communities of practice; leadership; information & knowledge audits; KM strategy development. She is the editor of Rethinking Knowledge (2002).  Kim is also  an author, poet and freelance writer, with specialization in history and mythology.
